The research activities in the Institute aim at the elucidation of well-coordinated and well-balanced regulatory mechanisms in the human body to maintain an active, healthy, and long human life, which is an important issue in the new century. To achieve substantial contributions to this goal, the Institute is organized into 2 major departments and 2 affiliated research center, and each department comprises of 3 to 4 laboratories, as shown below. Current research activities include genomic screen of diabetogenic genes using human materials and diabetic model animals, regeneration of pancreatic islets from embryonal and neonatal tissues, and regulatory mechanisms of insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells. Research activities on vascular biology, gastroenterology, and hepatology are also under development. These research activities will bring elucidation of the pathogenesis and the development of a new treatment for life-style based common metabolic disorders, which are rapidly increasing in this new century.
